The domestic dog (canis familiaris) is referred to as man's best friend. Its scientific name is Canis lupus familiaris and is an subspecies of the grey wolf. Our domestiserte dogs have been man's best companion of all animals in all times.
Our domestic dogs have an achieved an important place in human history, and ever since it was tamed for 15,000 years ago it has helped people all over the world to resolve difficult challenges, such as to scare away predators, for livestock protection, and in transportation. For example, the emigration over the Bering Strait had not been possible without sled dogs.
Dogs is also helping people in today's society, and they perform many useful roles for us humans. They perform tasks related to hunting, herding, protection, guarding, assisting handicapped individuals, and many other assignments.
It is estimated that there are 400 million dogs in the world. They exist in a wide range of colors, sizes, and with widely different properties. With selective breeding, we have shaped dog breeds that have been two two resolve specific tasks.
