The breed is approved in the section «Bichons and related breeds» (9.1) in the class «Companion and Toy Dogs». Federation Cynologique Internationale i.d. for havanese is 250 and was added to the catalog 2008-11-04. American Kennel Club groups the breed as «Toy Dogs». United Kennel Club acknowledges the breed as «Companion Dogs» in their catalog. Canadian Kennel Club groups the breed as «Toys».

The Havanese's physical structure:Havaneses are usually mini. Males get as tall as 8 to 12 inches tall. Female dogs reach a hight of 8 to 11 inches tall. Males weighs 7 to 13 pounds.
