United Kennel Club involves the breed as «Terriers» in their registry. Canadian Kennel Club categorizes the breed as «Terriers».

Health issues in the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier: Sadly, any Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier may experience serious health difficulties. Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is a dog breed which is sometimes handicapped by hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia disorder is a polygenic trait. This the breed are often sometimes handicapped by a disorder called Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA). This disorder may cause blindness. The PRA disorder is always causing progressive vision loss and eventually blindness. They may have other health difficulties as well, including flea allergies, PLE, PLN.

The dog breeds appearance: Males get as tall as 18 to 20 inches tall. Female dogs reach a hight of 17 to 19 inches tall. Males can weigh 35 to 45 pounds. Female dogs is 30 to 40 pounds. The fur is of medium length.

The soft coated wheaten terrier were originally bred for guarding, droving, herding, vermin hunting, and as farm dog, watchdog, and companionship.
